Role Introduction

Eton College are looking for a Software developer to join our  IT Department, who are responsible for all of the Eton College’s information and communications technology services for more than 2,000 users, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Services provided for staff and pupils are in many ways exceptional for a school, the IT team work hard to keep the college running with fast gigabit internet speeds and WiFi services throughout, and are continually working to improve upon them. There is an ambitious IT project roadmap, in addition to the usual workloads, with the opportunity to learn about and work with the very latest technologies.

Main Duties

The main purpose of this role will be to support the Data & Software Development Manager with the day to day responsibilities and tasks that they are faced with. This will involve both the smooth and efficient running of services and development of new initiatives

  • Development and deployment of new systems as required either for new management functions or to replace obsolete systems
  • Integration of new and existing systems within a common data framework in accordance with our Data Strategy
  • Provide second line support, on occasion first line support and maintenance for database systems and applications
  • Provide IT support on database systems and applications for Eton College staff and students
  • Working to standards of design, development, change control and documentation as specified by the IT Software Development Manager
  • Deputising for the IT Software Development Manager as and when required
  • Reporting to the Head of IT Systems during the IT Software Development Manager absence
  • Contribution towards team projects
  • Responding to general enquires, requests and any other ad hoc requirements

The Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role, the incumbent should have:

  • A good knowledge of  Microsoft SQL Server, including the writing of stored procedures and views, database management and SQL Server tuning
  • Knowledge of and skills in C# and ASP.NET
  • Knowledge of Visual Basic would be advantageous
  • Experience of Microsoft Visual Studio and associated toolsets
  • Competence in VBScript, JavaScript and HTML
  • A good background in application architectures
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services
  • Technical experience of implementing educational administrative database systems would be an advantage
  • Excellent customer service skills and a friendly and helpful manner
  • Methodical approach and a close attention to detail
  • Confidence and willingness to learn and adapt to new software technologies
  • Good communication skills and ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workloads
  • The ability to deal effectively with teaching and support staff, and with students, in a busy academic environment
