Flute Teacher

Role Introduction

Eton College is seeking to appoint an experienced and talented Teacher of Flute to join our thriving Music Department. The responsibilities of the role will be to teach individual lessons on Flute (and sometimes piccolo) as well as coaching of woodwind chamber ensembles. Teachers are expected to conform to the administrative and reporting procedures of the school and to be supportive of the activities of the department.

Working Pattern

The teaching element of this role is expected to be for approximately 7.5 hours per week, the ensembles are for 3.25 hours per week. However, there is an element of flexibility required in the role, and the number of lessons taught may change on a termly basis. There is no guaranteed number of pupils or hours of teaching. The post holder will also coach small ensembles, which normally happen on a Tuesday.

Main Duties

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Teach individual Flute lessons to pupils across the 13-18 age range;
  • As advised by the Head of Section, coach ensembles by attending regular rehearsals and concerts;
  • To monitor, record and report on pupils’ progress;
  • Attend the annual VMT department meeting and sign up;
  • Meet all administrative and reporting deadlines;
  • To attend events in which your pupils perform (when possible);
  • Commitment to and promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion;
  • All positions at Eton are classed as ‘regulated activity’ as per the Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance, therefore a good understanding of safeguarding procedures is essential;
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, including but not limited to, completing safeguarding training as required, and ensuring any safeguarding updates issued by the College are read and understood;
  • Understand and comply with procedures and legislation relating to confidentiality.

The Ideal Candidate

Skills and Competencies Required

To be successful in this role, you will need to be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Previous experience of teaching 13-18 year olds;
  • Have a degree in music from a recognised conservatoire or university, or equivalent experience;
  • Have experience of coaching ensembles;
  • A diploma/professional teaching qualification would be desirable.

  • You have exemplary written communication skills and excellent oral communication skills, especially in relation to staff, students and parents;
  • You have excellent organisational and IT skills;

  • You have the ability to adapt to changing situations;
  • You are able to work evenings and weekends by arrangement;
  • You show a proven commitment to professional development.
