Boarding House Chef

Role Introduction

We are looking for a Boarding House Chef to run the boarding house kitchen, working in conjunction with the Catering Management Team, Housemaster and Dame to support and deliver the provision of meals, social events and functions within the Boarding House.

Our Boarding House Chefs are key roles within the College and have an important part to play in making the boys’ experience of College life as good as it can be.

This role is for 40 hours per week, working 6 out of 7 days during term time.

Due to the needs of the school and the department, we may interview suitable candidates before the closing date. This job may also close early if a large number of applications are received. You are advised to submit your application as early as possible to avoid missing your chance to apply.

This role does not attract Skilled Worker visa sponsorship

Main Duties

  • Produce daily nutritious meals, using fresh ingredients, including breakfast, mid-morning snacks, lunch and supper including any special dietary requirements
  • To ensure that all food is presented to the highest standard
  • To display a good understanding of quantities when producing for both large scale and hospitality numbers
  • To demonstrate a thorough understanding of all kitchen equipment
  • Preparation, cooking and service of all additional house functions
  • Complete the daily food safety and allergen paperwork as required by Eton College Food Safety Management System and Food Hygiene Policy
  • To work in compliance with the Food Safety Management System and Health & Safety Policy
  • To order all foods as required
  • Assist in the cleaning down of the kitchen and pantry each day
  • Support all aspects of production and presentation of service, having regard for delivering high standards of health and safety, hygiene, nutritional value and allergen control and ensure non-compliance is reported in your kitchen to the Catering Manager;
  • Undertake a monthly stock take
  • Attend all annual training as requested and required by law and The College
  • Be flexible to work across the catering operation in the College as required
  • To work with the House Master, Dame and boys to increase the boy’s nutritional awareness;
  • Undertaking any other reasonable duties to help facilitate the smooth running of the Boarding House catering services.
  • To cover duties when necessary, to include sick cover at short notice at any of the college catering areas
  • To demonstrate a positive working style with an enthusiastic, committed and flexible attitude
  • To correctly complete and use cleaning schedules to ensure that the kitchen and ancillary areas are kept to a very high standard of cleanliness
  • Ensure good communication across the kitchen and other areas of the house
  • To undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required of you in the post

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, including by not limited to, completing safeguarding training as required, and ensuring any safeguarding updates issued by the College are read and understood;
  • Understand and comply with procedures and legislation relating to confidentiality.

The Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role, the incumbent should have:

  • Previous experience working as a chef
  • Experience using fresh produce
  • Team player with the ability to be flexible
  • Good communication skills
  • An ability to work unsupervised and to use own initiative
  • Ability to work calmly whilst under pressure in order to meet deadlines
  • General interest in/passion for good food and taking pride in the food that is produced
  • To be able to supervise and support a small team
